The Art of the Pivot

What’s become clear to me, however, is the importance of being adaptable. You may spend months designing a policy or developing a recommendation you believe in wholeheartedly, only to see it halted by forces beyond your control. That’s when the art of the pivot becomes essential.

In the early stages of our careers, we are given direction and rules to follow. These guidelines are important, they help keep an organization aligned with itsobjectives, and for those of us just starting out, they make ourresponsibilities clear and straightforward.

But as we rise through the ranks, we eventually become the ones providingdirection and crafting the rules. I’ve learned this firsthand. What’s alsobecome clear to me, however, is the importance of being adaptable. You may spendmonths designing a policy or developing a recommendation you believe inwholeheartedly, only to see it halted by forces beyond your control. That’swhen the art of the pivot becomes essential.

How we adapt to an unforeseen outcome says as much about our leadership as theoriginal idea we put forward. I’ve grown the most in my career by learning howto take the sting of disappointment and transform it into an opportunity. That’s the essence of the pivot.

As one of my favorite philosophers, Peter Koestenbaum, once told me: “Change isthe only constant in life.” At this stage of my journey, I’ve learned not toget too attached to any one idea. Instead, I strive to stay present, readingthe room, absorbing the context, and adapting as needed.

When I’m able to do that successfully, it’s incredibly freeing. I remindmyself: what is meant to be, will be. That mindset leaves space to absorb inputfrom others and ultimately produce the best possible outcome based on thecircumstances.

As public servants, we are often naturally good at taking direction. But trueleadership also lies in knowing when to adjust course, and embracing the art ofthe pivot with clarity, resilience, and grace.
