Shannon,We have refined out newly elected orientation process over the years with an overall goal of improving its effectiveness. In April, we had an election which brought 3 new elected officials the to 7-member Council, each with varying levels of experience on local government boards. They each received a newly elected officials manual with the standard info. about the organization, legal/code requirements, and their role/responsibilities. What I think really made the orientation process beneficial were the three meetings that the Village Manager, Village Attorney and I had with each of the new elected officials. We followed the same general outline and shared the same information with each one, but tailored the sessions slightly depending on the experience and communication style of each individual. We met in the Manager's Office and used his whiteboard to outline basic information about the Village that became the basis for the conversations (see attached). It worked well for us, especially in establishing solid working relationships early on - hope you can find some value from the experience.
