Our transit department has the policy below on the books. We do not track the number of employees who use the benefit for commuting or errands. Transit is a City department, not a separate authority, so implementing the benefit doesn't require a great deal of policy or contracts. There is another, more formal agreement with the University of Virginia to allow students and staff to ride free. I usually walk to work but like the bus benefit during bad weather or if I have an unexpected meeting across town. "B. City and CAT ID Cards: All new Full-time City of Charlottesville employees are issued a City ID card. All City of Charlottesville employees may ride CAT buses fare-FREE by showing their City ID card. CAT issues an ID card that is used to “punch in” and “punch out” of the CAT electronic time clock and access the facilities at Avon St. and the Downtown Transit Station."
