Every merit position requires a HS diploma or GED. If we have an applicant that lacks those qualifications, we can employ them on a temporary basis and plug them into an adult basic education (ABE) program. We have a good relationship with the regional community college and our K-12 education system. This is not unusual. We have other positions that require specific licenses (CDL). If we have a good candidate, we'll employ them in temporary status and help them get the required credential. One of the keys is to keep HR from simply weeding out anyone who doesn't meet minimum qualifications. I ask our DHs to "roll the dice" on a few candidates in every hiring process, picking applicants who may not have all of the required experience or qualification, but seem to have potential.
