Cupertino Block Building Community Program

Mar 16, 2012

The Cupertino Block Leader Program is aimed at bringing neighborhoods and communities closer to themselves and each other by putting responsibilities back in the hands of the neighborhoods.  Each neighborhood has its own block leader, who is responsible for transmitting information through the neighborhood, building civic engagement, being sensitive to cultural differences, and communicating with neighbors.

They entire program runs with a budget of $88,000, and allows Cupertino to respond to emergencies and service needs faster and easier.  More than 350 residents now function as block leaders, all of whom are trained in cultural sensitivity, communication, and emergency preparedness.

This case study was nominatedy for ICMA's Annual Awards Program.
