Join your colleagues for a lively discussion at the 11th annual BIG Ideas meeting in Clearwater, FL on September 13-15, 2019.
Hosted by the Alliance for Innovation, BIG Ideas is a national event that gathers approximately 100 progressive leaders from across the US and Canada together to explore critical issues for the future of communities. The Alliance's mission is to help build thriving communitites through guiding local government transformation. Through focus on strategy, culture, and ecosystem, as well as peer-to-peer learning, we are able to spark relationships, ideas, and creative work to accomplish our mission.
BIG Ideas 2019 weekend is scheduled for September 13-15, 2019 and will be held in Clearwater Florida.
The 2019 Topic: Two Americas
Discussion on the growing economic divide in our country that is manifesting in things like lack of affordable housing or medical care, underfunded public schools, the digital divide, workforce shortages within the context of the under employed and the unemployable, the urban-rural divide in terms of economic resources, etc.
If BIG attendees agree that there are “Two Americas” in terms of “haves and have-nots,” what should local government’s role be in addressing the repercussions to our residents? How do we address the expectations across the spectrum of “haves and have-nots?”
During the event, the group will dive into provocative questions, such as:
- If you are an urban community, are there “two” of your city or county?
- If you are a rural community, does your city or county fall more within the “have not,” spectrum in terms of access to jobs, technology, medical care, etc?
Does your city or county have identifiable socio-economic gaps or underserved populations that impact policies and services? Is your community challenged to ensure equitable access to housing, services, schools, health care? What if anything can our cities and counties do to address the divide? What can local government really do in terms of economic development that has been the “go to” answer for these problems for the last 50 years, i.e. jobs, jobs, jobs….. How do traditional local government services address non-traditional problems, i.e. the “digital divide?” or affordable health care?
How do we prepare as managers to work in divided communities? How do we as local government professionals address the disparate challenges of the “haves and have-nots” when our budgets are often built on taxes that mean the “haves” pay more and the “have nots” pay less yet need more in terms of supporting services.
