The South Sound Military & Communities Partnership (SSMCP) is a great example of how local governments and military-community support organizations can band together in a regional partnership to collaborate with a local military base on a myriad of issues. The process which created this regional collaborative provided an opportunity to address land use compatibility issues that could negatively affect JBLM’s mission. SSMCP also conducts service member needs surveys and provides a regional forum for everyone—including the public, elected officials, regional staff, and private organizations—to speak with one voice on military-support issues. The SSMCP currently has over 120 collaborating partners representing 1.5 million residents in Pierce and Thurston Counties.
