Orange County, FL developed a Neighborhood Preservation and Revitalization Division (NPRD) that will focus on outreach to citizens. The NPRD continued to host an annual community conference aimed at informing, enabling and energizing citizens interested in learning how to improve their neighborhoods. Based on feedback from citizens, it was suggested that Orange County host this type of event to high school students who have already exhibited leadership in the community. The idea was that the county could begin to groom citizens to be active in the community and to be involved in the decision making of government. Nearly 200 students attended and participated in interactive workshops and mock hearings that taught them about community service and about local government.
