Local Government Wikis

To learn how to use the Alliance for Innovation's Local Government Wiki's and review guidelines and instructions, visit http://www.tranformgov.org/wiki_home.aspx.

Sustainability Wiki - The moral and leadership challenge for today's managers is how to balance the need to make decisions that protect the environment, with the need to protect economic progress, health, opportunity and justice for all. City and county managers are uniquely positioned to help elected officials and communities navigate through the difficult choices of a diverse, democratic, local environment within a global context of rapid change and increasing interdependence. In the examination of sustainability here, the topic has been divided into five sections to provide separate attention to the planning and development dimension of sustainability and other aspects of the economy. In addition, a separate section of financial and organizational sustainability is provided.

Public Workplace Wiki - The changing dynamics of today's workforce require local governments to develop better methods to attract and maintain new talent but also to reorganize themselves to take advantage of new capabilities and new technologies. In the Alliance for Innovation Public Workplace wiki we are looking to explore and get your feedback on alternative workweeks, generational differences, and recruitment strategies, to name a few.

Fiscal Crisis Wiki - The developing fiscal crisis facing city and county governments calls for extraordinary actions by local officials. Fortunately, research on organizations' responses to previous downturns and other adversities provides important lessons for today's managers. A cadre of researchers in the Academic Network of the Alliance for Innovation prepared this white paper for the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). It is intended to help local government managers understand the nature of this fiscal crisis and the steps they can take to support economic recovery. Within the pages of this wiki, Alliance for Innovation local government experts are exploring the nature of today's fiscal crisis and what specific steps can be taken to pursue economic recovery for our communities.

Arizona Green Energy Forum - The economic recovery programs recently announced may provide a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to change the way energy efficiency is addressed and potentially “to do things we could not do before”. The sheer volume of new funds, especially if paired with other tax incentives and utility credit programs will allow solar or photovoltaic technology to be introduced for residences and commercial facilities where it was previously prohibitive.

Sustainable Cities Network -
GIOS, in conjunction with Sun Corridor cities, established a network of the sustainability policy leaders and practitioners for area cities and towns. Our goal is to establish an informal coalition for sharing opportunities, challenges, and best practices, and for building linkages between local practitioners and university researchers. This Sustainable Cities Network brings sustainability into the forefront of city operations and policy and create and nurture a local cadre of sustainability experts and practitioners. This will in turn propel the valley into the forefront of national leadership in sustainability.

Tampa Bay Area Sustainability Coalition (TBASC) - The Alliance for Innovation Tampa Bay Area Sustainability Coalition (TBASC) is a local government management group convened to bring together like-minded professionals who are committed to sustainability, to explore and implement innovation. The Tampa Bay region of Florida is a driver for sustainability in Central Florida that has an impact throughout the state.

Local Government Blogs

Local Stimulus Funding Blog - In April 16 2009, the Alliance for Innovation sent out a request for information on local stimulus funding to several networking groups within our Knowledge Center. 20% Wind Energy by 2030 Webinar - Wind power can play a major role in meeting America's increasing demand for electricity, according to a groundbreaking technical report, 20% Wind Energy by 2030: Increasing Wind Energy's Contribution to U.S. Electricity Supply, prepared by the U.S. Department of Energy with contributions from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the American Wind Energy Association, Black & Veatch and others from the energy sector. The report explores one scenario for reaching 20% wind electricity by 2030 and contrasts it to a scenario in which no new U.S. wind power capacity is installed. It examines costs, major impacts and challenges associated with the 20% Wind Scenario. It investigates requirements and outcomes in the areas of technology, manufacturing, transmission and integration, markets, environment and siting. The report finds that the Nation possesses affordable wind energy resources far in excess of those needed to enable a 20% scenario.

Flexible Workweek Innovations - This blog stemmed from a popular webinar on Flexible Workweek Innovations. Innovation in scheduling within the workplace is a next practice that local government has begun to explore and is having success with. During the 90-minute presentation attendees heard an overview of alternative work options, highlight current trends, discussed outcomes and measures, shared critical elements to flexible workweek programs and reviewed next steps to implementing flexible workweek programs.
