Phoenix, Arizona: Developed with Arizona State University, the Alliance for Innovation offers the Innovation Academy as an exclusive program for local governments to learn and apply the innovation process and foster a culture where innovation can thrive to meet the current and future needs of their communities. Since its inception, the program has graduated 58 organizations and over 600 individuals across North America.

Congratulations to the following organizations who have graduated from the Innovation Academy Class of 2019:

  • Coconino County, Arizona
  • Dallas County, Texas
  • Hennepin County, Minnesota
  • City of Raleigh, North Carolina

These organizations formed cross-functional teams and met monthly with their class cohort.  Through interactive virtual sessions, an Innovation Playbook, innovation assessment, and coaching with a team mentor, they were able to apply their learning to a project that will have a lasting impact on their organizations.   Teams typically continue past Academy graduation and apply the process and tools learned to continue building innovation capacity in their organizations.

The Academy curriculum includes the following session topics: What is Innovation, Setting the Stage to Build a Culture of Innovation, Problem Solving/Opportunity Clarification, Idea Generating, Prototyping and Experimentation, and Implementation, Evaluation and Scaling. Most of the participating organizations chose to have the Alliance for Innovation come onsite to their organizations and conduct additional training with their leadership team.

The 2019 Academy graduates were recognized at the Alliance for Innovation’s 2019 Transforming Local Government Conference in Reno, Nevada on April 12, and also had an opportunity to present their projects in a Rapid Fire session showcase for conference attendees from across North America.

Joel Carnes, Alliance for Innovation President & CEO said, “It has been an honor to have these teams in the Academy this last year.  Through their dedication, engagement, and passion for innovation, they are leading the way for their organizations and communities, and also for the larger innovation ecosystem in public service, and we are proud to be a long-term partner in support of their efforts.”
